Monthly Meets

Aprl BPF14 Meet Up

It's April already in this full festival year so join us to find out what's in store for the 6th edition of Brighton Photo Fringe: BPF14.

The dates are set for BPF14, launching on 4th October and running to 2nd November, and we're looking forward to hearing what you're up to: are you planning to exhibit, are you looking for other people with whom to form a group, struggling to find a venue, need some advice on your project, or is this your first encounter with BPF and just want to see what it's all about?

We've got some frequent Fringe exhibitors on hand to share their plans and experiences with us, and we'll be discussing where plans are for the regular program elements like the OPEN solo exhibition opportunity.

This time we are meeting at Fabrica:

40 Duke Street
BN1 4AG

10 April
18.00-20.00

So come along, we'd love to see you there!

September Monthly Meet

We've been away for a while, but we're back for a September Monthly Meet!

Phoenix Brighton
Wednesday 25th September
6pm - 8pm

Lisa Barnard joins us at this session to discuss her work and involvement with Brighton Photo Fringe: from her project Virtual Iraq which one the inaugural Danny Wilson Memorial Award in 2008, to Maggie for the 2010 festival. Lisa will be showing a selection of images and discussing her latest project.

Following this, Fergus Heron gives a short talk - "Why 2013 is significant for the culture of photography". The cultural landscape of photography changed significantly in the decade since 2003, the inaugural year of the Brighton Photo Biennial and Brighton Photo Fringe. Fergus discusses and shows some examples of how the photography community of Brighton has contributed to the recent process of transformation of photography in Britain.

We'll also be talking about whats in store for BPF13. We will have news of events in partnership with Miniclick and ArtsFORUM, more info on our participation projects, we will be launching a crowd-funding initiative, and you'll get your first peek at the selected artists for the OPEN13.

Doors at 6pm for a 6:30pm start.

So join us for a drink - we'd love to see you there!

June Monthly Meet

This month we are back upstairs at Fitzhertberts. So come along for a drink and catch Joan Alexander in conversation with Rebecca Drew.

June 18th / 6.30 - 8pm
Upstairs at FitzHerberts, New Road

Joan Alexander was the Danny Wilson Memorial Winner of 2012 and we are very excited that is is coming along to share and discuss her practice with us.

The work stems from an engagement with moving light and cast shadows, as quiet markers of time their movement implies a rightful passing through space. It is based on experiments in shadow catching and light tracing to interrupt, imprint and record layers of time.

April Monthly Meet

Upstairs at Fitzherberts
Tuesday 16th April

Based in the South East, Interlope consists of Ali Farmer, Fleur Alston, Jane Sellman and Elin Karlsson. For the 2012 Brighton Photo Fringe they walked from the Lucy Bell Gallery in St Leonard's on Sea to Brighton for the exhibition "Along the Lines of..."

"We had one show in St Leonard's and one in Brighton and wanted to walk in between the two venues to symbolize the journey ahead of us as artists as we had just left university." Along the way they made new work inspired by the cultural heritage of the South Coast.

Since the festival Interlope has been invited to take "Along the Lines of..." across the channel to an arts festival in Dieppe, France (www.diepfestival.wordpress.com). For this stage they are taking the project further developing ideas for a book. "We are testing ourselves as a collective, working with the curation of the photograph and new ways of making work through interaction with the landscape."
