About
Brighton Photo Fringe supports photographers and lens-based artists by creating platforms for and coordinating exhibitions that showcase the best of current photographic practice. Brighton Photo Fringe aims to embed photography into the cultural fabric of Brighton and Hove and the wider region, increasing access to and participation in high quality photographic exhibitions and events.
Every two years Brighton Photo Fringe coordinates a city-wide festival of exhibitions and events in conjunction with Brighton Photo Biennial, that in 2008 included 82 exhibitions featuring works by over 300 artists and had an audience of 45,000-50,000. An accompanying programme of networking events and artists’ professional practice workshops supports and develops the community of participating photographic artists, and a programme of participative projects and exhibitions aims to develop and increase both audience and exhibitors from communities who would not otherwise be able to engage. This programme of events and workshops wraparound the festival thus maintaining a Brighton Photo Fringe presence throughout the year, involving new audiences, and supporting ongoing audience and exhibitor participation. Brighton Photo Fringe promotes and supports cultural diversity in all its activities, and has built partnerships with black and minority ethnic groups, disabled peoples’ art projects and drug and alcohol service user programmes.
After three burgeoning and highly successful events in 2003, 2006 and 2008 which have seen the participation double at each event, Brighton Photo Fringe is now working towards running its forth edition in October-November 2010 and is developing high profile exhibitions and events for the interim period. Please see OPEN ’09 for details of interim open submission exhibition.
Brighton Photo Fringe is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
