Welcome to a very sunny BPF Newswire!

Brighton Photo Fringe’s Project Manager, Tasha Ba-Abdullah and former Director, Helen Cammock sent us a report on what they’ve been up to in Barbados!

Hi everyone!

We’ve installed an international photography exhibition that included Caribbean and British photographers as part of the Roots and Wings Open Call, in partnership with Urban Flo. The exhibition is in the Steel Shed in Queens Park, Bridgetown and has been supported by the National Cultural Foundation and National Art Gallery Commission, Barbados.

We’ve also run a photography workshop for a group of young people from Barbados Community College – the workshop went really well and the young people were both focused and creative. Work from this project will be exhibited as part of Brighton Photo Fringe 2012.

We’ll also be doing professional development sessions and studio visits for interested local practitioners in the remaining days of our stay in Barbados.

It’s been really busy and very hot, we’ve met some amazing people including photographers who are passionate about their work and who really want to be part of a network offering exchange and dialogue with other photographers and lens based artists internationally.

See you soon!

Helen and Tasha

Why would I exhibit in the Brighton Photo Fringe?

Brighton Photo Fringe is a city-wide festival of exhibitions that are promoted throughout the South East and London. Operating in partnership with the Brighton Photo Biennial means we attract diverse and large audiences including industry professionals. This, in turn promises more exposure for you and your work! Participating in the festival you are certain to meet like-minded practitioners, develop contacts, and get peer and professional support and advice on your practice.

How do I find an exhibition space?

The majority of artists find and secure and manage their own exhibition space, either as an individual or as part of a group. Support for finding a space, fundraising and much more will happen at our networking meetings. You can also find a list of spaces and venues used previously on our website.

How can my exhibition be in the brochure?

We are currently firming up the details of cost, images and copy for the brochure and map for 2012, and will update this section shortly. We do, however, have deadlines for submission below:

Reserving space – 27th July 2012

Send copy, image and payment from 30th July 2012

What is the Online Focus?

Online Focus is a free online platform for photographers, lens-based artists, curators and audiences to participate in an experiment with exhibition curation. Growing and evolving over 12 months, the final crowd-sourced exhibition will be printed and exhibited as part of the Brighton Photo Fringe festival in 2012. See the Online Focus site for more details and to get involved!

Can I volunteer with the Brighton Photo Fringe?

Yes! We have amazing support from our volunteers, and really value the contribution they make to the success of our program. There are a variety of ways you can be involved, from working with us in the office to invigilating at an exhibition or event. Check the website to see what opportunities are currently available, or email our Office Manager, Jane to find out more: jane@photofringe.org

Can I exhibit in the Fringe Focus space?

The Fringe Focus is the hub venue for the festival and, in 2012, will be housed in the Phoenix Gallery. The selected artist for the Open ’12 will have their exhibition here for the duration of the festival. There will also be space for a group show and two individual pods, and additional space at the Red Roaster café (a second BPF venue in 2012) all of which will change during the six weeks.

The majority of artists who take part in the Brighton Photo Fringe find and manage their own exhibition space. The space available in the Fringe Focus is limited, and so allocation of one of the exhibition spaces will be made by lottery.

Click here to submit your exhibition for the chance of a space in the Fringe Focus.
